A Survey of Water Use and Common Industry Practices in Commercial Broiler Processing Facilities
نویسندگان
چکیده
A survey of commercial broiler processing facilities across the US was conducted to determine overall water use. Seventy-two percent of the respondents reported using city water to process broilers, and 66% reported discharging to city sewers. Over 41% of the responses were from facilities located in the Southeast; however, there was no relationship between location (region of US) of facility and water use or location of facility and water recycling/reuse. Overall, the average water use prior to implementation of the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) was 20.6 L/bird, while the current post-HACCP water usage was reported as 26.0 L/bird. Analysis of data also showed a significant relationship between the amount of water used to process each broiler and the size of the broiler being processed. In addition, over 38% of the respondents reported that they recycle water, and a significant relationship was observed between the amount of water recycled and the size of facility. Data from this survey may be used to assist companies interested in establishing water conservation programs or conducting water audits.

Impacts of food processing industry on some environmental health and safety factors
In developing countries, it is common to site (or locate) industries without environmental impact assessment. In this study the impacts of two food processing industries on land use and land capability, noise and vibration, environmentally sensitive areas and visual quality as environmental elements were investigated. The research method adopted was the investigative survey research approach (I...
متن کاملThe characterization and incidence of pale, soft, and exudative broiler meat in a commercial processing plant.
Pale, soft, exudative (PSE) turkey meat is a growing problem for the industry of further processed poultry meat. The low pH condition due to rapid glycolysis while the body temperature is still high leads to protein denaturation, causing pale color and reduced water-holding capacity. This condition impacts product yield and quality. These studies were designed to estimate the incidence of PSE b...

Abstract Background and Aims: Newcastle disease (ND) is a highly contagious disease that affects many species of birds and causes significant economic losses to the poultry industry worldwide and the pathogenicity of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) strains varies with different virulence. We aim to detect lentogenic (low virulence) ND virus (ND/IR 2010) using sentinel birds and molecular det...
متن کاملGarbage Management: An Important Risk Factor for HPAI-Virus Infection in Commercial Poultry Flocks
Garbage management represents a potential pathway of HPAI-virus infection for commercial poultry operations as multiple poultry premises may share a common trash collection service provider, trash collection site (e.g., shared dumpster for multiple premises) or disposal site (e.g., landfill). The types of potentially infectious or contaminated material disposed of in the garbage has not been pr...
متن کاملNitrogen emissions from broilers measured by mass balance over eighteen consecutive flocks.
Emission of nitrogen in the form of ammonia from poultry rearing facilities has been an important topic for the poultry industry because of concerns regarding the effects of ammonia on the environment. Sound scientific data is needed to accurately estimate air emissions from poultry operations. Many factors, such as season of the year, ambient temperature and humidity, bird health, and manageme...
